Ingredients & Their Functions:
Vitamin A is used primarily as an immune enhancer in viral illnesses and in the treatment of numerous skin disorders. Vitamin A and the naturally-occurring carotenes found within are used as antioxidants in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It is critical to a healthy functioning immune system. A-deficient individuals are susceptible to infectious diseases, particularly viral infections. During the course of ensuing infections, the already low vitamin A stores can be severely depleted. It is essential to reproductive health as it is essential to sperm production, regular ovulation, and in decreasing the risk of follicular and luteal cysts. Vitamin A is also reported to protect against dry-eye related diseases, macular degeneration, and cataracts.
Vitamin D deficiency results in rickets in children and Osteomalacia in adults. The more common consequences of the deficiency is lack of bone strength and density, joint pain, mood and immune dysfunction. Vitamin D is thought to be preventative of hyperparathyroidism and at least sixteen cancers (including breast, ovarian, prostate, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). Severe asthma in children is connected in part to D deficiency, lack of cognitive function in the elderly, and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease in adults. It is used in the treatment of Type 1 and 2 diabetes, hypertension, and glucose intolerance. If you have dark skin, maintain a strictly vegan diet, or your access to strong sunlight is limited (such as in Northwest Indiana) you are at high risk for being vitamin D deficient. This deficiency contributes greatly to your susceptibility to many diseases and mood disorders.
Vitamin E is used as an antioxidant that protects against damage to the cell membranes. The cells of our bodies would be quite susceptible to damage without it, nerve cells in particular. It acts to stabilize and protect cell membranes from heavy metals and toxic compounds. Vitamin E exerts a protective effect in many common health ailments. It is most important in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s; and as protection from heart disease and stroke. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells and reduces the risk of prostate and bladder cancer. Low E levels have been shown to contribute to and increase the risk of certain types of cancer (including cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and lungs). In one study, researchers found that that individuals with a low level of vitamin E in the blood had a fifty percent greater risk of developing cancer compared to those with a high level.
It is necessary for proper blood clotting, maintaining healthy blood pressure, healthy veins, and in combating diabetes by targeting damaging oxidative stress.
Vitamin K is essential for the deposition of ionic calcium needed for proper blood coagulation and bone formation. It is found to have protective action against osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer treatment & prevention, and arterial calcification. It is helpful in cases of excessive bleeding, cardiovascular disease, varicose veins, dementia, infections, and cancer. The cancers it is said to be helpful against include leukemia, prostate, lung, and liver.
Selenium functions primarily as a component of the antioxidant glutathione, which with vitamin E, works to prevent free radical damage. Low levels of selenium are linked to a higher risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory diseases, premature aging, and cataract formation. Selenium is an important supplement in the elasticity of tissue in younger-looking skin and a key factor in skin-related inflammatory disease such as eczema and psoriasis. Selenium is essential for proper fetal growth and development, in fact, low levels of selenium have been linked to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and low birth weight babies.
Zinc is in every cell of the body and is a key component in over 200 enzymes. In fact, zinc is more important than any other mineral in its role in enzymatic reactions. It is a necessary for the proper action of insulin in the body, growth & sex hormones. Clinical conditions associated with Zinc deficiency include: Frequent and/or severe infections, sleep and behavioral disturbance, delayed wound healing, psychiatric illness, inflammatory bowel disease, impaired glucose tolerance, malabsorption syndromes, reduced appetite & anorexia, growth retardation, night blindness, impotence/infertility, almost all dermatological disorders, abnormal menstruation, dandruff & hair loss, obsessive & addictive behaviors, connective tissue disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is critical for immune, skin, behavioral, and hormonal health.
